Sid Luckman - Bears hold NFL record

Broncos To Challenge 74 Year Old NFL Record

Sid Luckman - Bears hold NFL recordThe year was 1940, the quarterback was Sid Luckman, the team was the Chicago Bears, the opponent was the Washington Redskins, the game was for the 1940 NFL championship and the final score was Bears 73 Redskins 0. The 73 points the Bears put up haven’t really been challenged in an NFL playoff game since.

In 1999 the Jaguars dropped 62 points on Marino’s Dolphins, a score that still remains the 2nd highest in the NFL playoff history. The Broncos will be satisfied with a win this weekend but their high powered offense has a good a shot as anybody at beating the age old NFL record.

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos set the NFL record for most points in a season with 606 points in 2013. Manning also set the single season record for yards (5,477) and touchdowns (55).

Of course, there is a reason this NFL record has stood for so long, the playoffs are über competitive, just look at this past wild-card weekend for proof of that. San Diego might be the lowest seed but they certainly do not play like it. They are a tough football team, but so is Denver.

Britton Colquitt shouldn’t have to punt this week. Everybody knows that the Chargers are going to run the football and play clock-control to try and keep Peyton’s offense off the field. But the fact is, Manning will get his chances and make the most of them, that’s what he does.

Looking back over the season shines a bit of light on why the Broncos have a shot at breaking this record. To open the season the Broncos put up 49 points on the defending Superbowl champion Ravens, a game which also saw Manning tie an NFL record for throwing 7 TD’s in a game.

The Broncos scored 50+ points three times this season against the Eagles, Cowboys and Titans. The only bad news is that the Broncos lowest scoring total this season was actually against the Chargers. But fret not.

Broncos 52 Eagles 20
You might say that the record is safe for now, but don’t forget – records are meant to be broken…right?
