Just the kind of story we hate to report. Last night in SW Denver, near Kipling and Quincy a house fire broke out. The erupted from the bottom level quickly spreading and at one point the Fire Department did not feel they could enter the structure. The only problem? There were people still inside.

The couple that lived there with their disabled son had to escape from a second story window. Unfortunately, they could not get their son out in time. Heartbreaking to say the least. They also lost two dogs that did not make it out in time, one was saved and is currently with a neighbor. While escaping, both husband and wife were injured from the jump/fall.

Neighbors, Shawnah and Dennis Henrikson ran into the house to try to help but say the flames were too hot and smoke was too thick. They went to the backyard with their own ladders and helped the victims escape, they are true heroes.

The cause of the fire is not known although witnesses say that it started in the basement. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time. If you would like to help the family:

People can also drop off diapers, linens, furniture, household items like blankets and gift cards at the Governor’s Ranch Elementary School at 5354 S. Field St. in Littleton from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, until March 1.

At the Heritage Christian Center at 14401 E. Exposition Ave. in Aurora, people can drop off smaller items like diapers and clothing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until Feb. 15.
