Hickenlooper’s connection to the Chinook Fund
Although Hickenlooper makes much of his struggles to launch a business during the recession in 1988, he managed a year earlier to pitch in $2,000 of his oil company severance to co-found the Chinook Fund, a foundation that provides startup grants to community organizations that emphasize social change. He since has given tens of thousands of dollars to Chinook, which in 15 years has doled out more than $1.3 million to groups including:

Colorado Campaign for Middle East Peace, which has sponsored protesters to tear town Israeli road blocks in the West Bank.

Colorado Hip-Hop Coalition, a group dedicated to “community empowerment for youth through hip-hop culture.”

Gender Identity Center of Colorado, a group supporting “people who cross dress, are transsexual, or are non-traditional in their gender identity.”

Denver Cop Watch, which monitors police brutality in the city and has spoken out against police compiling “spy files” against peaceful protesters.

The Boulder Living Wage Campaign, which wanted that city, its contractors and grant recipients to pay workers a minimum of $12.50 per hour – vastly more than the $5.15 minimum wage required federally. However, he opposed a similar living wage initiative in Denver, where he owned seven restaurants, employed 400 workers and has enjoyed a $125,000 city loan and a $3 million subsidy from the Denver Urban Renewal Authority. Taken from a 2003 Denver Post profile written by Susan Greene

He never seems to remember anything that he has done in the past. Case in point: He said he did not know who Van Jones was. If you remember, he was the “green” energy czar who was ousted when it was revealed that he was a communist. “I got to talk to Van Jones, and he is a rock star. He is. Everything you’ve ever heard about Van Jones, he’s bigger and better in life than what you’ve heard.” — John Hickenlooper, May 2009. This quote from when Van Jones was being honored by the Colorado Environmental Coalition last May. Hickenlooper and Van Jones were scheduled participants/speakers at at least five separate events duing the 10 months from August 2008 through May 2009. But when questioned on the Mike Rosen show, Hickenlooper’s claim was something between “I never paid
much attention”, “I thought he was just involved in education”, and “I don’t remember.” Didn’t know his restaurants were hiring illegal aliens until one shot and killed Denver Police Officer Donny Young. Was not aware of the gang intimidations in downtown Denver until a gentleman was harassed downtown and then followed home by these gangs and killed. Do you want a Governor that has amnesia?

Three tax-slashing and government-limiting initiatives on the November ballot would cripple Denver’s finances and restrict the city’s ability to borrow money to make improvements, Denver City Council members say.
The council plans to pass a proclamation tonight urging voters to reject Amendments 60 and 61, along with Proposition 101. Voters statewide will vote on the proposals in November.
Amendment 60 would roll back and limit property taxes. Proposition 101 would slash about $62 million in local taxes from the city’s general fund, more than the city spends annually on parks and recreation.
Amendment 61 would lower Denver’s debt threshold so much that the city would either have to delay or no longer proceed with $121 million worth of projects and infrastructure upgrades already approved by voters, budget officials say.
Voters approved the spending as part of a $550 million bond package in 2007.

I, for one, will vote yes on all three of these Amendments. The government continues to request increases in our taxes and the poor working stiff is the only one that has to foot the bill for all of their reckless spending. Everything continues to go up and our income is not increasing at the same rate. I cannot and will not continue to support the government in the style that they accustomed.

We spend a billion a year to maintain the “undocumented people” here. Quit providing for the “undocumenteds” and we can proceed with the $121 million worth of projects and infrastructure that was part of the 2007 $550 million package that was already approved. The government tells the voters that their taxes will go to one thing and then they borrow from that package to pay for something else and then turn around and ask for more money for the project we already approved. How much have we poured into RTD? That is a bottomless pit of reckless spending.

Until the government can show me that they have stopped wasteful spending and can show me their budget and what is spent where, then I will continue to vote down their request for more money.

The Rusty BucketThe first sign that I noticed inside The Rusty Bucket was of course one that read “Free WiFi” – that will always get my attention.

But I wasn’t there for that. I had ordered a couple of burgers and chili to go.

So I walked past the crowded bar area to get to the back where the restaurant part of The Rusty Bucket resides.

And viola!

The Rusty Bucket Burgers This is the Wadsworth burger (Provolone, grilled mushrooms & onions and topped with bacon strips)

And the California burger (With provolone and avocado)

Both burgers were cooked right and very tasty.

The fries were just ok potato fries, the mashed were bland and missing gravy. The Chili had a decent kick and good flavor.

Oh, and for all you die-hard Broncos fans – The Rusty Bucket is a Pittsburgh Steelers joint.

Quite frankly I haven’t paid any attention to the LeBron James free agency ordeal. Don’t really care actually.

But then I was at Johnny’s NY Pizza and saw a sign. A sign that said why LeBron James must sign with the NY Knicks.

Free Pizza when LeBron James Signs with the Knicks Free pizza (at Johnny’s of course) when  LeBron James signs with the  Knicks.

That there is all the reason in the world to  sway my vote.

So, sorry Cleveland, sorry Chicago – LeBron  James must sign with the Knicks so we can  get free pizza at Johnny’s.

Do you find yourself wishing it was Friday when you just got to work on Monday? When I was young, I would trudge in on Monday and greet fellow employees on the elevator saying “I wish it was Friday”. Now I come in on Monday and say “wow the weekend just flew by”. It feels like I just left here and no longer “wish” it was Friday because now it is always Friday. I was wishing my life away. Now I wish it would just slow down to the lovely, lazy pace of summers past when I had all the time in the world to play and lay in the sun and run through the sprinklers and ride my bike. Or just lie in the backyard in the grass and clover and look up and imagine what the cloud formations looked like.
I am at the point in my life where I want to try and savor everything because it seems like the days are minutes and the months are weeks. What happened? What is really scary is that my 18 and 16 year old granddaughters feel the same. It used to be just the “old folks”, of which I am now one, that used to tell us young ones that the older you get the faster time goes. I choose to believe that in this new day and age it is technology that causes time to feel as if it is going 100 miles an hour and is on a super fast track to the end. My reasoning for this is that we no longer have to wait for anything. You can get approved for a loan in an hour, you can get a letter from a relative in minutes by email or instantly if you use instant messaging! Get on a plane and fly across the country in 3 hours. It used to take us 4 hours in the just to go visit relatives 200 miles away. The only advantage in time going by so fast (and this is only my theory) we are not aging as fast because in actuality, years are only 6 months long not 12. That is why people live longer because the years are shorter. How do you like that for a scientific theory?
I now find myself thinking in February that I need to start planning what to plant in the flower beds because it will soon be Mother’s Day and I must plant them or I won’t be able to enjoy them in this now abbreviated summer. I almost feel a panic of trying to get everything into my life and to really enjoy it. We have to get together for Memorial Day, 4th of July, birthdays, breakfast in the mountains, etc, etc. And then guess what? It is Labor Day and then the kids are back to school. How did this happen?? I want it to slow down. I wish I could make it slow down.
This past year I made a real effort to not worry so much about how many people were coming to dinner during the holidays and what I was going to make. I even hosted a cookie exchange and really enjoyed myself. I want to make memories so that my children and grandchildren and, hopefully, great grandchildren will remember me with fond memories just like me and my children have fond memories of my own mother. If only I could have just a ½ hour of time again with Mom. Sitting in the kitchen solving crossword puzzles, going to bingo, making ornaments or Halloween costumes or just talking to her as she makes tortilla dough. Just once more dying and cutting her hair, putting her make-up on for her or even just a quick hug.
Take time to love and to listen to your friends and family. If your family wants you to go to dinner or whatever, savor the fact that they want you around. Enjoy your time here because all too soon we will no longer be. Hopefully, we will be with God and I am thinking that it is going to be just like my childhood was!

The Colorado Rockies’ – For years, Denver Baseball Fans dreamed of having a Major League ball club; their patience paid off in 1993. City efforts paid off and The Colorado Rockies were created as an expansion franchise. They began playing in Coors Field, a state of the art ballpark in 1995. The Rockies advanced to the playoffs in 1995 but were eliminated in the first round. In 2007, the Rockies’ advanced to the playoffs and won the NL Championship Series. Unfortunately, the Rockies lost to Boston in the World Series…
